Phentermine and Breastfeeding

What Is Phentermine?

Phentermine (chemically known as Phenyl-Tertiary-Butylamine) is a drug found in weight-loss supplements. Phentermine is generally used to treat obesity as well as suppressing appetite and stimulating metabolism. Since its introduction, Phentermine has been one of the most successful weight-loss supplements today. It is classified by the US Food and Drug Administration as a Class C drug, meaning no or insufficient studies has been made regarding its use as well as its side effects.

Can Women take Phentermine while breastfeeding?

There haven’t been any significant findings about Phentermine and its possible effects during breastfeeding. Please do remember that Phentermine is related to Amphetamine, another chemical substance that is known to pass through breast milk which can cause abnormalities and problems to the baby drinking it. It is highly recommended that women should consult their doctors before using Phentermine or any weight-loss supplement for that matter. For the baby’s safety, mothers should not take any weight-loss supplement during the baby’s breastfeeding period.

What side effects can nursing mothers experience with Phentermine?

Though little is known about the product’s side effects to nursing mothers, its usage may trigger the following:

  • Addiction
  • Withdrawal Syndromes
  • Hyperactivity
  • Dryness of the Mouth
  • Unpleasant Taste

Phentermine’s side effects are not as severe as compared to using it during pregnancy. However, to be safe, mothers should not take any weight-loss supplement while nursing the baby. The chemical components present in Phentermine may mix with the breast milk which can alter its quality and taste. Consult your doctor about taking in Phentermine while nursing a baby.

What side effects can babies experience?

Again, despite little is known about its effects to breastfeeding babies, the use of Phentermine may cause the following for the infant:

  • Abnormalities
  • Health Problems
  • Vitamin Deficiencies
  • Hyperactivity
  • Irritability
  • Increase in heart rate
  • Increase in blood pressure
  • Dehydration
  • Difficulty in Breathing

Do not hesitate to call or consult your doctor or healthcare provider immediately if your baby seems to be acting differently. Chances are they may have signs or manifestations of the side effects from taking Phentermine or any weight-loss medication for that matter.

Are there any recommendations about using Phentermine while breastfeeding?

Breastfeeding is one of the most crucial stages in the baby’s development. Babies rely on the nutrients their mothers’ supply. As such, mothers should always take caution about taking weight-loss supplements such as Phentermine. As a general rule, mothers are discouraged to take any weight-loss supplement while nursing the baby as it can reduce the supply of breast milk as well as affect its quality. Phentermine (taken in large quantities) can mix with the breast milk. A baby drinking breast milk with Phentermine content in it may cause problems with the baby’s development as time passes by. Always consult your doctor or pediatrician before considering taking weight-loss medication. Also, it’s discouraged for mothers to take any weight loss medication or any drug not prescribed by their doctor for their own health and safety as well.
